Elon Musk is trying to back out of his $44 billion deal to buy Twitter. In a regulatory filing on Friday, Musk’s lawyers claimed Twitter was in “material breach of multiple provisions” of the deal, and “appears to have made false and misleading representations.” As for speculation that Musk is looking lower the price he’ll pay for the company, which is currently worth significantly less than Musk’s offer back in April, Twitter chairman Bret Taylor tweeted, “The Twitter Board is committed to closing the transaction on the price and terms agreed upon with Mr. Musk and plans to pursue legal action to enforce the merger agreement.” Musk signed a legally binding agreement to buy the company that includes a $1 billion breakup fee.
As media companies expand Spanish-language content, the TV landscape is undergoing a major shift. Latinx households, who have been among the most loyal to MVPD services, are now as likely to have similar penetrations of MVPD services compared to the total market (at 52% and 51% respectively) according to a new Horowitz Research report, “FOCUS Latinx: State of Pay TV, OTT & SVOD 2022.” The share of Latinx TV content viewers who rely only on streaming has continued its upward trajectory, with 38% of Latinx only subscribe to streaming services and not to an MVPD.
“We have always been bullish about the Spanish-language and Latinx-themed content space, but until recently, this was an audience that was underserved and an opportunity that was not being fully realized,” noted Adriana Waterston, Chief Revenue Officer and Insights & Strategy Lead for Horowitz. “The fact that Spanish and English mainstream and Latinx-themed content were offered in silos, rather than within the same channel or platform, was a major barrier to its growth and evolution. The introduction of Spanish-language content within ‘mainstream’ platforms, starting with shows like ‘Narcos,’ ‘La Casa De Papel’, and others on Netflix, has made media companies rethink their Latinx strategies.”
San Diego-based InnoVision Marketing Group has launched InnoVision Español, to serve businesses and brands wanting to reach the Hispanic community and Hispanic-oriented clients and companies. “Marketing to any specific ethnic group is very different from marketing to the English-speaking population,” said Ric Militi, CEO and Executive Creative Director. “Considerations must include accurate colloquial translation of the message, slang usage, improper insinuations, values and much more. Our Hispanic team at InnoVision are part of the Hispanic community, so the messaging is much more authentic.”
HBO has canceled period drama “Gentleman Jack,” a co-production with BBC, after two seasons. “When we began this journey more than five years ago, we knew the series’ creator Sally Wainwright had a uniquely compelling vision, and it’s been tremendously gratifying to see how Anne Lister’s journey has resonated with viewers,” said HBO in a statement. “We are incredibly grateful to Sally, to the impeccable Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle, and to the entire cast and crew for bringing Anne and Ann’s story to life.”
SAG-AFTRA members have voted to ratify a new Network Television Code for members working on morning news shows, talk shows, soap operas, variety, reality, game shows, and sports. “This agreement is a step toward elevating our consciousness and sensitivity regarding safe spaces for performers on set,” said SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher. “That is a big, transformative win. I also am pleased that our negotiators made meaningful gains with new compensation and improved protections for our members.”
Hallmark Channel Wines popped the cork on two new holiday-themed offerings, Holly (rich, fruity red) and Jolly (crisp, clean white). The limited release varietals are intended to complement Hallmark Channel’s Christmas in July programming stunt.

The new season is slated to premiere in spring 2023.
A+E Networks UK, SKY and Nutopia have teamed for “The Royal Mob.” The drama-doc tells the saga of the extended royal family that once ruled all of Europe, and how their loves, marriages and feuds dragged the continent into the world’s first total war and violent revolution. The series will air on Sky HISTORY in November.

Major League Baseball and Distill Brands International toasted a new sponsorship agreement that extends that makes Distill Brands the Official Vodka of MLB in the United States and Canada. Major League Soccer tapped IMG ARENA to serve as its Official Data Distribution Partner in a long-term, global partnership. The ACC, the Pac-12 and ESPN are reportedly in talks for a new TV partnership, per SI. All five episodes of “Showtrial” premiere on AMC+ and Sundance Now on Thursday, July 21. The new legal drama follows the case of the arrogant daughter of a wealthy businessman, who is arrested following the disappearance of a fellow student.
“Smothered” returns to TLC on Monday, August 8 at 9p. The season features four fan-favorite mother/daughter duos, as well as three new boundary-free pairings.
A crossover episode of PBS Kids animated series “Molly of Denali” and “Wild Kratts” airs Monday, July 18.
